Discussing Performance Appraisals

Many supervisors find the performance appraisal discussion to be one of the most disconcerting and difficult aspects of managing people. While writing a performance appraisal is difficult, speaking those words aloud while facing an employee can be challenging and anxiety-ridden for both parties.

In this book, we'll focus on how to deliver employee performance appraisals using a "Prepare, Schedule, Discuss" model. We'll review how to prepare yourself and your employee for the discussion; how to customize scheduling of the discussion to minimize stress and anxiety; how to manage the appraisal conversation; and how to move toward and achieve agreement on your observations and plans for employee improvement or enhancement.
